Information about ADX Indicator
Average Directional Movement Index otherwise known as “ADX” hails from the “Trend” Technical indicator breed. In 1978, J.Welles Wilder had produced this ADX indicator, as a way to evaluate the trend forces strength. The Traders commonly, use this indicator to evaluate if the trend will stretch or slowly lose the strength and also for getting important information while setting the entry and exit level at the Forex market place.
As the various produced curves fluctuate in the range of 0 to 100, this ADX can be categorized as an oscillator. Very rarely does the signal line goes beyond 60, still, values lower than 20 are regarded as a feeble trend, and moreover strong ones value crosses 40. The ADX indicator comes as 3 lines, first one is for measuring, the second for descending trend and the last one is ascending trend, these are referred to as Directional Movement Lines or “DM”, and further the signal line symbolize the “absolute” force of any of the ascending or descending movements.
Formula for ADX
The Metatrader4 platform of trading normally follows this ADX indicator and the following general and intricate series of calculations are involved:
1. On the Basis of the previous period high or low values, the positive and negative DM signs are arrived
2. For both of the Positive and negative movements, an average of the DM for Say N period is worked out;
3. Each of the Average DM is regulated by dividing the derived average DM with the Average True Range, other indicator to get 2 index.
4. Directional index is calculated as the absolute value % of the difference of the 2 DM’s divided by their sums.
5.Finally, a moving average for Directional Index is calculated for N periods.
The ADX sign normally comes in 3 lines of different colours. The “Blue” one represents ADX, “gold” line signify a descending trend while the “green” colour denote an ascending directional movement. A trader must know that the ADX indicator is the “absolute value”, positive number always calculate the strength of any of the ascending trend or descending movement. The ADX is frequently used to evaluate the prospective market changes with the support of value movements.
